This summer represents another exciting few months for live music in Westchester. To prepare you for the county’s upcoming flurry of eclectic sounds, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight a handful of standouts by genre. And if your favorite artist isn't on this list, it might be because their stopover is already sold out (as is often the case with Port Chester's prestigious Capitol Theatre), so consider these a starting point as you schedule your social calendar. And as always, feel free to sift through our broader online events calendar.
The Genre: Hip-Hop
The Artists: DMX, Swizz Beatz, The LOX, Drag-On
Where/When: Westchester County Center, White Plains, July 16
Nostalgic hip-hop fans will rejoice when this squad of rap legends, united by their ties to defunct label Ruff Ryders Entertainment, comes to the County Center with the kind of high-intensity performance that powered the late-'90s rap scene. Hits like DMX’s “Where the Hood At?” and The LOX’s “Money, Power & Respect” are sure to be on the set list. (If that's all a bit too old-school, you can always hit up StubHub for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' sold-out Port Chester gig in June.)
The Genre: Folk
The Artists: Various, "For Pete’s Sake! A Concert for Clearwater"
Where/When: Tarrytown Music Hall, Tarrytown, June 18
Big names like outlaw country man Steve Earle and new wave icon Kate Pierson of the B-52's will perform on the same bill as notable songwriters ranging from Lucy Kaplansky to Willie Nile in an effort to raise money for Clearwater, the environmental organization pioneered by recently deceased folk legend Pete Seeger. Count on an evening filled with acoustic harmony, environmental consciousness, and counter-cultural pride.
The Genre: Jazz
The Artists: Various, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts Jazz Festival
Where/When: Venetian Theater (and multiple on-site locations), Katonah, July 23
This day-long celebration of jazz, now in its 23rd year, will cap off with headliner and Grammy winner Chick Corea and his namesake Trio. And during the daytime, artists will be scattered across the Caramoor property. Plus, there will be a number of family friendly activities to keep your children occupied. Eat, drink, listen and generally lay back.
The Genre: Rock/Alt-Rock
The Artists: Various, Pleasantville Music Festival
Where/When: Parkway Field, Pleasantville July 9
Missed out on Manhattan’s Governor’s Ball or don’t feel like lugging yourself down to Tennessee for Bonnaroo? You can still experience that positive, carefree festival vibe at Pleasantville's annual gathering. This year's lineup boasts critically beloved singer-songwriter KT Tunstall and alt-rock titans, Guster, among others. Those audible treats, along with ample delicious food via area vendors, should help you muster the energy for a day of dancing under the sun.
