Best Places to Live 2018: Croton-on-Hudson

If you’re seeking a Westchester Rivertown that offers even more for the money, consider Croton-on-Hudson. At the same price point for houses in the Lower Westchester Rivertowns, you can find a much bigger home and lot in this quiet burg just north of Ossining. With its verdant surrounds, coupled with an express train into Grand Central and Amtrak access to northern and western routes, it’s easy to see why many residents love Croton.

“There’s enough amenities for a small town — a supermarket, coffee shops, and small restaurants,” notes Satoshi Maezono of Douglas Elliman. “But they also have so much nature, with hiking trails and a waterfront great for kayakers.”

Jason Wilson of LifeNY agrees that town benefits from the water views, natural surroundings, and the train station. “Many people in the surrounding areas will go to the Croton-Harmon station,” says Wilson. “That’s a major benefit and what commuters are looking for.”

Coldwell Banker listed this split-level property at $559,000. With 2,624 square feet, the four-bedroom home features hardwood floors, a finished basement, and proximity to the train station. Photo courtesy of PlanOmatic/Anthony Grippa

The town is also among the most affordable options for people drawn to Riverfront living, with a median sales price for properties of just $575,000 — way below the current county median of $700,000.
