Mediterranean and Mexican Food — Together At Last!

Chef Constantine Kalandris is blending the two cuisines at just-opened PopoJito in Scarsdale.

Open for just over a month, PopoJito has a lot going for it. It’s conveniently located less than a block from the Scarsdale Metro-North station, the space is stylish, and the food — a mix of Mediterranean and Mexican flavors — is casual and affordable. “The marriage of Mediterranean and Mexican came from something I do well,” says Chef Constantine Kalandris whose other restaurants 273 Kitchen in Harrison and 8 North Broadway in Nyack are solidly Mediterranean. The two cuisines are on-trend in that they share “a culture of great flavors, freshness, and organic ingredients,” he adds.

The restaurant is also entirely gluten-free with dishes like spicy melted eggplant with arbol chile, caramelized cauliflower tacos, and sizzling octopus, plus a selection of ceviche, salsas, and traditional Mexican tacos. “Scarsdale has been great,” says Kalandris. “There have been some lovely nods to the gluten-free aspect. I think, more than most towns, they want businesses to succeed.”
