Scarsdale

Klaff’s—The largest independent upmarket home design retailer in the US, the store’s 19,000 square feet of space includes five gorgeous walk-through showrooms (lighting, cabinetry, bath, decorative hardware, and tile and stone) that each contain striking, on-trend products. And to think, it all started humbly in 1921 when Joe and Mary Klaff opened a modest plumbing supply store. (914-740-1800; www.klaffs.com

Nana’s Attic—This eclectic antique shop has everything from vases and glassware to furniture to vintage dolls to an antique wicker baby carriage. (914-472-3806; www.nanasattic.com

Greenburgh Nature Center—This 33-acre nature preserve that attracts 70,000 annual visitors is one of the county’s best and also one of the few green spaces left along Central Avenue. (And yes, we’re aware it’s technically not on Central Avenue and instead a short drive up Dromore Road off of Central Avenue.) Sure there are 30 acres of woodlands, but the quality of the children’s programming—from hunting for gems and crystals to creating “wild” mosaics—is the main draw.  (914-723-3470; www.greenburghnaturecenter.org)

American Legends—Mom threw away your shoebox of childhood sports dreams cleaning out the attic? No worries. This sports collectibles shop, open for 23 years, will likely have the baseball (or football, basketball, or hockey) playing cards that you’re missing. The store hosts up to five major player signings a year and also sells equipment, jerseys, stadium-used seats, and more. (914-725-2225; www.amerlegends.com)

Candlelight Inn—With all due respect to the Anchor Bar, Duff’s, and all the other top upstate chicken wing joints, we think we have a contender that can stand toe-to-toe (er…wing-to-wing). The dive bar in the red house serves delectably juicy, addictive, and oily (in a good way) wings in mild, hot, extra-hot, Chernobyl, barbecue, and teriyaki. The kitchen is open until 3 am daily, only accepts cash, and does not take reservations—which only enhances their authentic wing-joint cred. (914-472-9706)

Danny’s Cycles—This full-service bike shop founded in 1967 (when it was called Cycle Circus) stocks road, mountain, comfort, hybrid, commuter, and folding bikes in models ranging from basic to high-end. Danny’s, which has grown to 12 metro-area locations, is a top-rate service shop (there’s always a mechanic on duty to service all bike makes/models) that provides a lifetime of free general tune-ups for new bike purchasers.
