Barbecue-Mexican Mash-up Makes it North of Manhattan

What started as a food truck has expanded into a quick-casual, full service restaurant with three locations in Manhattan…and now one in Stamford. While staying true to the vibrant vibe of the other Mexicue locations, the Stamford spot is on the water with a rooftop that’ll be perfect for sipping on frozen margaritas come summertime.

“We looked all over Westchester and Fairfield County but as soon as we saw this space, we felt like it would be a good fit for Mexicue,” says Thomas Kelly, co-founder and president of Mexicue, and Mount Kisco resident. “We felt really good about it.”

Just like the name implies, Mexicue is a modern, American take on Mexican cuisine. “It is the slow and low, smoky comfort food of southern American barbecue and the fresh, bold flavors you find in Mexican cooking,” says Kelly.

His favorites on the menu are the pulled pork tacos, slow-cooked, smoky pork topped with a creamy chipotle sauce, and fried tortilla chips seasoned with a barbecue rub and topped with a crunchy herb arugula slaw. “You got textures and flavors hitting you from every angle,” says Kelly. To complement it, try the spicy margarita, made with a chili cinnamon-infused tequila that adds a layer of depth that makes it extra delicious.

What makes multiple appearances on the menu is the burnt ends chili. It’s rendered down brisket, mixed with several different chili peppers, Mexican chocolate, and 30 other ingredients. “It’s layer upon layer of smoke, flavor, and spice,” says Kelly.

Mexicue started in 2010 as a food truck. “We were seeing the food truck trend happening in California for a long time, and that summer is right when that trend hit New York City,” says Kelly. “There were always classic street foods out – hot dog and pretzel stands – but the more thoughtfully branded food trucks with creative twists hadn’t quite hit New York yet. It was an exciting corner of the food world that we were a part of.”

As for the expansion of Mexicue, Kelly is taking it day-by-day. While they’d like to open another location in Westchester or Fairfield County either later this year or early next year, his focus is trying to execute well at the ones they have up and running. “We love the city but we’re super excited to be operating in Stamford,” says Kelly. “We’re excited to be part of this community.”
