The brand new Union Hall General Store in North Salem offers a little bit of everything, from specialty foods to original art and house wares including custom embroidered linens from Atelier Edith Mezard (she’s done work for Calvin Klein and Princess Grace of Monaco), knives, soaps, candles, and throws. Proprietor Jane Beltz, yoga teacher and North Salem resident, and her design team of Nicholas Xatzis and Emma Sainz traveled extensively to find rare, artisanal handicrafts produced locally in small villages.
Built in 1848 as a general store, much of the original millwork and architectural details were well preserved. Xatzis and Sainz, of Pure Form Design Lab in West Cornwall, Connecticut, created a distinctly modern interior that honors the building’s historical integrity. Wherever they could, they used original materials and techniques, reclaimed local woods and stone, hand-blown glass, and antique mirrors. In the future, Beltz plans to offer prepared foods to go, tea ceremonies, cooking demonstrations and tastings, and more.
