Best Eco Furnishings & Art (2012)
Lots of people—your precocious preschooler, perhaps—can make art from paint and paper, but from banana peels, edamame, and coconut shells? That’s what these folks do, and we are absolutely loving the gorgeous—and eco-friendly—results. Each one-of-a-kind piece of art or furniture is handcrafted from organic materials found in the Philippines. Other components used to create the striking wall hangings, sculpture, seating, and end tables include tobacco leaves, nautilus shells, banana bark, wood harvested from 100-year-old fallen trees, rattan, and cocoa twigs. “We believe in regenerating what normally would be considered waste and making incredible art from it,” says owner Mitchell Siegel. Particularly incredible? The oversized mirrors framed with inlays of rice, soybeans, and even peanut shells.
