Set in Stone

The fact that five generations have owned and operated this family business for nearly 80 years is reason enough to garner a “best.” But longevity alone doesn’t do it. From all the designers, contractors, architects, and landscapers we’ve spoken to over the years, this place ranks number one as the source for quality masonry products.

Value Plus Service

Before The Home Depot steamrolled onto the home-improvement scene, there was Consolidated Plumbing Supply, a 3,500-square-foot warehouse of a space featuring a bevy of major brands as well as rows and rows of bathroom, kitchen, and plumbing supplies. Yes, we love it because it’s been family-owned and -operated since 1928 (we’re all about supporting local businesses), but we also admire it for its fair price points, its knowledgeable staff, and the way they treat us, even if we’re just shopping for a lowly faucet. Good luck finding all that at a big-box store.

Deborah Cronin calls herself a “life-long sewer who is lucky enough to sew for a living as well as for her own enjoyment.” Her to-the-trade workroom specializes in window treatments, and her passion for sewing shines through in all she does. “I consider it a privilege to be able to make a living doing what I love,” she says. The Cover Up

“Upholstered headboards and coordinating upholstered cornices, not popular since the heyday of The Dick Van Dyke Show, are now back—gracious, gorgeous, theatrical,” says Patricia O’Shaughnessy of Patricia O’Shaughnessy Design in Bronxville. Her go-to team is
â–  Amys Interiors in Eastchester (295 Main St, 914-779-1265). “This family of craftsmen produce beautiful custom work, within a well-organized studio,” she says. “True artisans!”
When Georgene Mongarella of The Color Schemer needs inventive custom upholstery work,
â–  Sunshine Interior Decorators in Mount Vernon (554 E Third St, 914-664-2155) is her first choice. “No job is too big or too small and Michael Marcelin is very customer-service oriented”.

Carpets

Huge Inventory—Carpet Trends is a fave of numerous designers because of its tremendous inventory of manufacturers. “Their samples are well organized and tightly packed all under one roof,” O’Shaugnessy says. “My sales person, Maria Brown, is very knowledgeable and honest about the strengths of one product over another. Once I sent pictures of a high-end carpet to her, and she was able to identify it—just from the image—and gave me the name of the manufacturer and a quote! Carpet Trends also is generous with their samples and will loan samples to designers for a week. They even send an estimator to quote a job without a down payment.” Insider tip: Its Summer Remnant and Sample sale starts July 28.

Shop at Home—It’s not often a female flooring expert comes to your home to show you samples of tile, carpet, laminate, and more, but Debbie Gartner, owner of Elmsford-based Floor Coverings International, does just that. Her shop-at-home flooring store allows you to see the colors and textures in your own lighting. “Flooring can look very different in a store versus your own home,” she says. “I not only offer the convenience of coming to you, but, more importantly, bringing a color-coordination perspective.”

Customer Service—“Mike McRee is terrific,” enthuses Georgene Mongarella of The Color Schemer. “I bring samples of fabric to him along with my client’s price range and we go from there. He and his wife, Mary Lynn, are both very pleasant to work with, knowledgeable, honest, and very customer-
service oriented. He also does washing and maintenance.
