Best Bargain Date - Slapering Hol Press Second Friday Café 2009

How’s this sound for a date: a little wine, some cheese, a poetry reading, and a Q&A afterward with the poets? Poetry is romantic, you get to look smart—and the whole thing costs only five dollars. The series resumes in October.

Best Source for Literary Inspiration 2008

Washington Irving, Don DeLillo, and...you? The Hudson Valley Writs' Center has everything you need to nurture your inner scribe: classes, seminars, and workshops in poetry, essays, fiction, and memoir (with award-winning, published writers as faculty); readings with local and established authors, such as Ben Cheever and Jeff Gordinier (check out the Summer Sunset series, which kicks off with a performance by Anthony DaCosta, throughout July and August; see the website for the full schedule); and even its own small press, which has published works by Billy Collins and other poets. Even its location, in the historic Philipse Manor railroad station, should provide some inspiration.
