Object Out Loud: Arman and Nick Cave

Oct 15—Jan 7 • Katonah Museum of Art

Both of the celebrated artists featured in this unlikely exhibition use found objects as the basis of their work, creating pieces composed of items many might only see as trash. A pioneer of post-modern art, Arman’s sculptures address social unrest and upheaval through accumulations of tools, musical instruments, and other objects. A noted performance artist and sculptor in his own right, Nick Cave similarly works to further social commentary with his incredible assemblages of scavenged articles.

Romare Bearden: Abstraction

Sept 10—Dec 22 • Neuberger Museum of Art

It’s safe to say collage would not be the robust artistic genre it is today without the forward-thinking work of Romare Bearden. Honored in 1967 with the National Medal of Arts, Bearden founded the civil-rights-inspired art group The Spiral and was a celebrity by the time of his death in 1988. Few, however, are aware of Bearden’s abstract watercolors, stain paintings, and mixed media works, which are featured in this exhibition that illuminates a rarely glimpsed side of a true creative master.

In the Limelight: Toulouse-Lautrec Portraits from the Herakleidon Museum

Sept 23—Jan 7 • The Bruce Museum

The decadence and debauchery of 19th-century Paris are brought to life in this exhibition of landmark French painter, printmaker, and illustrator Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Roughly 100 drawings, prints, and posters by the post-Impressionist will be on display, many of which satirize famous faces of the day, such as Sarah Bernhardt and Jane Avril. The extensive collection provides an up-close look at City of Lights’ boozy nightlife as seen through one of its most prominent artists.
