Like beauty, a real estate bargain lies in the eyes of the beholder. But there are certain common denominators that make a house almost universally appealing, especially when it’s listed at an affordable price: convenient location, desirable town, and updated design. Of course, in this HGTV era, houses needing TLC can be deals, too. “Fixer-uppers under $1 million are drawing both average homeowners and investment/flipper types,” says Glorianne Mattesi, associate broker with Douglas Elliman, who notes that flippers who pay cash often secure better prices than future homeowners who need financing.
