Best of Everything 2011 Design

Eileen Fisher Headquarters

We adore the simple, elegant lines of Irvington resident Eileen Fisher’s clothing, and it’s no surprise that she’d want her workspace to reflect the same aesthetic. Fisher, along with Irvington architect Earl Everett Ferguson, received the 2011 Good Design is Good Business Award from Architectural Record magazine for her headquarters in Irvington along with the company’s design studios and showroom in lower Manhattan. The magazine notes, “Thoughtful architecture, cohesive collaborations, and sustainable resource management benefit a client’s bottom line, productivity levels, and preparedness for the future.”

Orissa Restaurant and Wine Bar

When Cynthia Caracta and her husband, architect Niall Cain, decided to open a restaurant, it was pretty much a given that the result would be a design stunner. Cain, of NcC Studio Architecture, transformed a formerly ho-hum insurance office into a contemporary oasis complementing its menu of modern Indian cuisine. “The color palette was inspired by the colors in a book by our consultant chef Hari Nayak,” Cain says. “A lot of yellows, reds, and greens, evocative of Indian spices.” Materials, too, are inventive and thoughtfully lit. “We used eco-resin panels, one with seaweed and rings of bamboo laminated inside the resin and up-lit from below." Attention also was paid to acoustics. “There is an hourglass-shaped coffered ceiling in the main dining room wrapped in saffron-colored fabric with acoustic insulation above to absorb sound,” Cain says. Felt panels in the bar also have acoustic panels behind. Display niches were built into one wall; another wall of folding glass and mahogany doors open to the street for al fresco dining.
