This sleek kitchen was a playroom before it was gutted and reorganized. The European homeowners wanted a modern kitchen and access to the deck and yard from the space. “The concept [was] for three walls to be the background and the island to be the focal point,” says architect Bart Hamlin. The island, along with the breakfast table, are both darker, to contrast the white cabinets and backsplash at the three walls. “[But] our favorite element is the folding doors and screens at the corner breakfast area.” With the doors closed, the kitchen still gets great light. If it’s a nice day, the doors can be fully opened, making this an open room; if it’s buggy, there are remote-control screens that convert the space into a screened-in porch. The general contractor was Bashford Construction Co. Inc.

The homeowners were downsizing from a 5,000 sq ft home to this 2,800 sq ft townhouse, but they still wanted ample storage and utility in their kitchen. The old kitchen was small, but designer Rajni Alex opened the space into the dining room, giving the couple more storage and room. A mirror was added above the eat-in area, to create an illusion of a larger space. Pendants were avoided to keep a clean sightline, and a glass table with a Lucite base was used to keep the space open and airy.

A gut-renovation took place in this home, and as part of that project, the rear of the house was enlarged and a new kitchen was built. The overarching theme for this design was peace and serenity. An enormous picture window leads the eye directly outdoors, and the kitchen opens completely with a folding glass door onto the spacious three-season porch. Charcoal oak cabinetry got sleek, back-painted glass doors, creating tension between rough and polished. The homeowner is an avid cook, and she wanted an open cooktop, where she could work while chatting with family and friends.
