A Tiny Jewel Box

The challenge facing Rye designer Erika Mercurio was how to create a cozy nursery that felt feminine without being too “girly” for her infant daughter, Emerson. “The footprint of the room is quite small—and there isn’t a closet—so it was important to choose the right pieces so it wouldn’t feel cramped,” she says. “The room was previously a boy’s room but I loved the paint color so much I kept it and added hot-pink accents, which give the room a nice balance.” She hand-painted the mural and selected accessories, including a quilt made by her mother, “antique handkerchiefs I found at a flea market in Martha’s Vineyard, a pink ceramic Mexican skull, stuffed animals with beautiful Indian fabric from a vendor in Rajasthan, a handmade elephant stuffed animal a friend brought back from Guatemala, and all the wonderful books.”
