Stephen Apkon, founder and executive director of the Jacob Burns Film Center, and his wife, Lisa, moved to Pleasantville back in the early 1990s. For them, one of the town’s major attractions was that they could walk to the train, library, and schools. (There are no school buses.) Once Stephen left his career in investment banking to start the Burns Center in 2001, he was even able to walk to work. The Apkons share their circa 1927 red-brick Colonial with their three children, two dogs, and a cat, plus an array of furniture, artwork, and accent pieces that the two have collected during their 23 years of marriage. Stephen, who’s just authored The Age of the Image: Redefining Literacy in a World of Screens and recently released two films, says that he and Lisa chose many of the items in their home “based on the stories they tell.” Here are their favorites.
