Lay It On
The recently opened Pelham Tile & Marble (84 Lincoln Ave, Pelham, 914-355-4847) showcases a bold, creative collection of wall and floor tiles, most imported from Italy, Spain, or Turkey, in addition to granite and marble countertops. Pelham is the exclusive dealer of the handsome Southampton Brick & Tile Collection, with tiles that appear to date back to ancient Greek or Roman times and others, in its Lea Storm line, that look like slate but are completely smooth. Other intriguing offerings include porcelain flooring you’d swear was wood—perfect for bathrooms because it stands up to water like a dream—and onyx-colored porcelain floor tile indistinguishable from marble (save for its more palatable three-dollar-per-square-foot price tag). Not sure just how out there you’re willing to go? All tiles are sampled on the store’s own floor or shelving, so you can get an idea of just how they’ll look in your own abode. Granite and marble installation is available.

Larry Guida, a 30-year veteran of the antiques business who specializes in fine antiques and restoration, was forced to close his former shop, Apple Antiques, after a devastating fire in 2008. Following a total renovation of that space, in September Guida opened the Westchester Antique & Gift Center (342 Lexington Ave, Mount Kisco, 914-242-5365), a new multi-dealer co-op featuring room-setting-style booths, and a warehouse area. Find 18th-century antiques, reproductions, fine English china, early 20th-century designer costume jewelry, antique French gilt picture frames, reproduction Anglo-Indian campaign-style furniture, mid-century modern designer furnishings, and more.
