Dining Preview: Hastings’ Fortyº North

There’s dining with a water view, and then there’s waterside dining—something only a few restaurants in the county offer. The latest to do so is FortyËšNorth, a contemporary American restaurant in the space that once housed Blu, adjacent to Harvest on Hudson on the Hastings-on-Hudson waterfront.  The tables on the 100-plus-seat lower deck are but a few feet from the lapping Hudson (with tennis courts to the other side, as the restaurant is part of the Tennis Club of Hastings), and there’s ample opportunity for spectacular Instagram-worthy shots of sunsets over the Palisades. There is also a 15-seat upper deck, a 60-seat dining room, and 15-seat bar.

Often, waterside restaurants use their prime location as an excuse to skimp on their menu offerings, but not here. In the kitchen is Ross Mendoza—who has worked at Jean-Georges’ Jojo, ABC kitchen (as sous chef), and ABC Cucina, plus at Tabla—serving up grilled branzino over couscous and clams; lamb with white-bean fricassee; farro (a nutty-flavored grain) with mushrooms in a leek fondue; and a top-notch quinoa salad with grilled bok choy and radicchio in a raisin vinaigrette. Entrées range from $14 to $29.

PS: Be extra-kind to your servers who have to hoof it up and down a flight of steps to the kitchen to service the lower deck.
