This Month's Winners and Losers: September 2012

Winners
-    Scarsdale and Harrison music students. Both towns, along with Putnam Valley, New York, were named the best communities for music education in the US by the NAMM foundation, a nonprofit organization advancing music and music education.
-    Infinity Repertory Theater. This Mount Kisco-based teen group traveled to Scotland last month to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
-    Uninsured Westchester residents. The county government has partnered with the ProAct Prescription Drug Discount program, which provides up to 70 percent discounts on prescription medications to uninsured or underinsured residents.

Losers
-    Rohan Wijetilaka. The Yonkers-based cardiologist and his office assistant/girlfriend were arrested for prescribing more than 2,000 prescription narcotics per month for patients he never treated.
-    Yonkers residents. According to a new financial forecast released by the mayor’s office, the city is on track to accumulate nearly half a billion dollars in budget deficits by 2016.
-    Southern Westchester BOCES taxpayers. According to published reports, taxpayers have been footing the bill for a BOCES superintendent who doesn’t exist—tax money has been allocated for the still-vacant position in the past two annual budgets.
