LUISA NEW YORK 42 Memorial Plz, Pleasantville (914) 741-2144

After a 20-year career as a chemical engineer in Israel, Israeli-native Gili Zilca decided to experiment with homemade soap formulations. That led five years ago to the launch of an online business. In July, Zilca opened Luisa New York, a little shop specializing in all-natural, handmade skincare products. “From start to finish, I do it myself,” Zilca says. “I have a little lab in the basement of my home in Briarcliff, and I make my own formulations, one small batch at a time, to keep the products fresh. Everything I use is natural. I wrap the soap by hand as well.” Featured in her main soap line is her signature olive-oil formulation (unwrapped: $1.20 per ounce; wrapped: $6.75 per pound) and other enticing scents like French lavender studded with actual strawberry seeds. Slices of soap (“We cut them like bread”) are also offered. Non-soap products include shea butter body scrub of lemon peel, rum sugar, and sea salt ($23), a “tea bag” used to scent bath water made from peppermint, lavender, and chamomile herbs ($3.30), and lip balm made from cocoa butter and bees’ wax ($2.95). Can’t decide? Zilic will custom-design a product formulation or scent just for you.
