Dining
My compliments to Editor-in-Chief Esther Davidowitz and food writer Julia Sexton on your August dining issue. I’ve lived in Port Chester for five years (a transplanted Manhattanite), and as someone whose been in the food publishing world for 20 years, I am very pleased by the wealth of restaurants and food not just in my town but Westchester in general.

I don’t know where you guys are eating in Westchester, but in the past three years we have eaten in many, many restaurants that you recommend in your magazine and most times are pretty disappointed with the meal. Additionally, comparing any Westchester restaurant to the three you mentioned in Manhattan—Union Square Cafe, Cookshop, and Savoy—is crazy. Take Cookshop, for instance. Why are there no creative young chefs offering interesting menus at reasonable prices like at Cookshop and Little Owl? The only one that comes to mind is Anthony Gonclaves at Trotters.

It baffles us and more than a few other Northern Westchester foodies that you continue to ignore Stoneleigh Creek, even to the extent of excluding it from your restaurant listings. Perhaps “under the radar” communities, as you describe Croton Falls, don’t deserve more than a single listing, by your editorial standards. Yet, the new steakhouse you reviewed received three stars despite having two signature dishes fall well short of acceptable.
Well, here’s a news flash for you: Stoneleigh Creek is reopening in Armonk in early August and perhaps the change in zip code will inspire you to give it a fresh look and at least inclusion in the listings. The Rubeos have a large and loyal following so they must be doing something right. Their credibility has been earned; yours may be on the line.

The Best “Best” Ever
Thank you for creating a spectacular “Best Of” issue (July 2007). I have been using the same cake studio in Manhattan for all of my special events since I moved to Westchester nine years ago. However, after reading your issue, I decided to try your editors’ pick of Lulu’s in Scarsdale to create my husband’s 50th birthday celebration cake.
Not only did it look like an exact replica of his vintage ’65 Ford Mustang, but it tasted magnificent! I can honestly say that had you not mentioned Lulu’s my husband’s milestone would not have been as special.
Keep up the good work!

War Story
I recently read an article “Westchester at WAR!” (Chronicles, July 2007) about the USS Westchester County. There is a display of the ship in the Westchester County Veterans Museum in Lasdon Park in Somers. The display features a model of the ship, photos of the damage caused by an explosion the ship suffered, the ship’s flag in a box with names of the 25 sailors who were killed, and other artifacts. The Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 until 4 pm.
