Inspired by a lifelong love of skiing, 27-year-old fitness buff Caroline Levere opened the boutique studio SHRED Fitness in May in Scarsdale.
“Over the last few years, I’ve noticed that there have been rowing classes and boxing classes [popping up] but nothing that was related to skiing,” she says. Levere also observed friends of hers struggling when skiing because they lacked the necessary muscle stamina. “Although they worked out, you use very different muscles [for skiing], so they could only ski a few hours, and they couldn’t ski back-to-back days, because they were too sore or tired,” she says.
So, the Larchmont resident started speaking with people in the fitness industry and met with NYC workout guru Emily Fayette to create a unique program.
The fitness class is a 45-minute circuit-based workout that incorporates cardio on The Skier’s Edge, a low-impact machine that simulates the lateral motion of the sport, coupled with strength training using dumbbells and medicine balls.
The class increases endurance and balance and is geared toward people of all fitness levels. And it’s not just for snow bunnies, as Levere states that only 30 to 40% of clients say they’re serious skiers. “The others didn’t come by because love skiing. They just came because they think it’s a great workout.”
When people say they aren’t going to try the studio because they’re not into the sport or because it’s not winter, Levere says with a laugh, “You go to a boxing studio, yet you don’t walk down the street and punch people, so why are you not going to try a new workout?” She explains that a class at SHRED is great for those with bad knees, since it’s low-impact, despite being high-intensity. “It’s quick: You’re in, and you’re out, and you’ve got your cardio and your strength work. It’s a very efficient workout, and it’s really fun.” The 2,000 sq. ft. studio, meanwhile, is equipped to host personal, corporate, and charity events.
