The Latest Town News in Peekskill, Cuchanan, Cortlandt, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers

PEEKSKILL—Some city residents are uneasy about plans by The Renaissance Project, a local drug-abuse treatment organization, to build a methadone clinic on Peekskill’s border with Cortlandt. More than 675 people signed a petition to block the construction in what critics of the project call a redeveloping neighborhood.

BUCHANAN—The Nuclear Regulatory Commission directed Entergy Corporation, the company that owns the Indian Point nuclear power plant, to upgrade its fire-control systems throughout the facility. The regulators concluded that the current system would not respond to a fire emergency quickly enough.

CORTLANDT—Residents anticipating a Walmart Supercenter across from the Cortlandt Town Center will have to make do with the Walmart they already have. The owners of the 33-acre site, where the new store would have been constructed, sold the property, and its new owners aren’t interested in a “Super Walmart.”

MOUNT VERNON—Nurses from Mount Vernon Hospital picketed outside the beleaguered medical facility, protesting their working without a contract for two years.

YONKERS—The city’s cash-strapped school district is planning to lease a defunct Catholic school on North Broadway to increase its capacity to handle a spike in enrollment. It would be the second parochial school leased by the city.
