Pure Mountain Olive Oil Opens in Tarrytown

There’s not a clear bottle to be found at Pure Mountain Olive Oil (11 N Broadway, Tarrytown 914-418-5453; puremountainoliveoil.com), the new shop proffering more than 40 specialty olive oils and balsamic vinegars. “Light and air are bad for olive oil,” says 32-year-old Zak Cassady-Dorion, who co-owns the 2,500-square-foot store with cousin Charlie Ruehr. “My cousin and I grew up together in foodie families,” says Cassady-Dorion. “This store is an extension of our passion for quality food experiences.”

But “passion” doesn’t begin to describe it—fanaticism might be more apt. Cassady-Dorion also has all the olive oils he sells lab-tested to make sure they are 100-percent olive. “Many supermarket olive oils may contain canola and soybean oils,” he explains. Among the olive oils at Pure Mountain, you can find selections from Turkey, Argentina, Tunisia, Chile, Spain, Greece, and Italy, as well as naturally flavored varieties including scallion, Persian lime, rosemary, oregano, and Meyer lemon. (Most 12.6-ounce bottles cost $17.95.) Vinegars get even more inventive, coming in flavors like cinnamon peach, fig, cranberry walnut, blackberry, and chocolate.

Not sure what to do with Meyer lemon olive oil and fig vinegar? Cassady-Dorion provides suggestions with descriptive (and very helpful) placards noting flavor-profile details, to-serve-with suggestions, and recipes beneath each oil and vinegar. And, of course, you can pick up flavored sea salts, bread from Sleepy Hollow’s Arthur Avenue Bread, and pasta from Brooklyn’s Sfoglini right in the store.
