Yonkers costume superstore previews what’s hot this Halloween.

Who’s going to be ringing your doorbell this Oct 31st in search of goodies (for more on what kind of goodies, see page 32). Vampires? Zombies? Nope. According to Yon Zweibon, owner of the largest private costume shop in the metropolitan area (her 12,000-square-foot shop, Beyond Costumes in Yonkers, is crammed with every sort of get-up imaginable), your male trick-or-treaters will likely be donning a blue-and-white suit with matching hood, and wielding a shiny red, white, and blue shield—Captain America. “Parents have been asking if we have costumes from the movie The Avengers,” says Zweibon, whose shop not only has Captain America for rental, but “we also have Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man.” Zweibon reports that superheroes in general are hot this season, especially Superman and Spiderman—and, for the girls, Wonder Woman. “With all of these superheroes, the neighborhood should be safe this Halloween,” Zweibon quips.
But, still, many girls are opting for that timeless classic: princess. “That’s always in style. What little girl doesn’t dream of being a princess?” Zweibon says. Kids aren’t the only ones who like to play dress-up on Halloween—although this year, the adults are veering more toward period costumes depicting real-life historical characters. “It’s especially fun when a couple or a pair of friends wear complementary costumes,” notes Zweibon.
