In the admittedly slow restaurant world of Yorktown Heights, “Nepali-Tibetan” Jewel of Himalaya hit like a bomb. A “Worth It” in the New York Times was enough to ensure that local, restaurant-starved crowds would pack its small, spice-colored space nightly—and even strand a few aspirant diners outside.

And why not? Nepalese cuisine has the charm of being theoretically exotic, while also offering intriguing twists on the Indian and pan-Asian dishes that locals know and love. Look for fried rice, lettuce wraps, samosas, and delicious beef momo: fried, thick-skinned dumplings with highly spiced filling. There are also thalis—those circular metal platters of mains, sauces, and dals—that one traditionally finds in Indian restaurants. In fact, Indian food lovers will find much to love at Jewel of Himalaya, though many dishes, like thukpa soup, a comforting soup with hand-thrown noodles, belong strictly to Nepal. Don’t miss delicious chapati, naans, and parathas, and, especially, don’t skip deep-fried Tibetan bread. It’s the perfect vehicle for scoops of sour-hot vindaloo and lush, lentil-thick makhani.
