New Rochelle boasts a vibrant downtown with an active business community and educated workforce. Nestled along the picturesque Long Island Sound, the city has ample parks and islands that let residents enjoy stellar views. It also features award-winning public and private schools and a library that is the second busiest in the county.

New Rochelle’s thriving downtown business district has upscale housing stock, a variety of shops and a burgeoning restaurant scene. The nonprofit Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) is comprised of 800 business and property owners who promote economic development, new business and new investment. Initiatives include a free Wi-Fi network encompassing 20 downtown blocks; summer jazz events; outdoor movies; sidewalk sales; and cultural events. BID also focuses on issues such as clean streets, façade improvement and parking. In the east end of the downtown, an aging mall was replaced more than a decade ago by a 1.2-million-square-foot entertainment center known as New Roc City. This $190 million centerpiece includes an 18-screen movie complex, an IMAX theater, a hotel, stores, apartments and restaurants.

Throughout downtown and beyond, artists occupy live/work loft space, just one part of a cultural scene that includes galleries and musical performances and is enhanced by an active Arts Council.

A number of banks add to the positive business climate, as does quick access to nearby I-95. Top executives make up 3 percent of the workforce in New Rochelle, and area residents work in finance and insurance; health care; education; professional, scientific and technical services; and construction.

Sound Shore Medical Center, a 252-bed hospital with a trauma center, stroke center and neonatal intensive care unit, is one of New Rochelle’s major employers. Another is Iona College, which educates 4,200 students and is well known for its topnotch Hagan School of Business. Monroe College offers a program of study in Hospitality Management and the Culinary Arts, and The College of New Rochelle produces future employees through its renowned teaching and nursing programs.

Crime in New Rochelle is well below the U.S. average, as is the unemployment rate, which, during the worst economic downtown in decades, stood at 7.7 percent in October 2009. The estimated median household income is $59,359, and the estimated median house value is $607,700. More than 80 percent of residents graduated from high school, and 38.3 percent have a bachelor’s degree or higher, while 17 percent of New Rochelle residents hold graduate or professional degrees.

New Rochelle was recognized in 2009 as a BusinessWeek “Best Place to Live” and in 2010 as one of Money magazine’s “100 Best Cities.”
The city of about 75,000 residents has long been known as a great place to call home. TV personality Jay Leno is perhaps the best-known son of New Rochelle, but cartoonist Walter Lantz and baseball legend Lou Gehrig hailed from the “Queen City of the Sound,” and it was also once the home of artist Norman Rockwell.
