Valhalla

The 411: Valhalla's name was inspired by Richard Wagner's opera, Der Ring des Nibelungen, and the hamlet sometimes lives up to its dramatic namesake. The Kensico Dam Plaza, for example, offers 98 acres of parkland with the jaw-droppingly theatrical backdrop of the 300-foot-tall stone dam. It's no surprise that this park is a favorite among bikers, skaters, picnickers, and hikers, and it's often the site of county festivities including ethnic festivals, concerts, and outdoor movies. Valhalla is also home to other county institutions, such as the 1.3-million-square-foot office park the Summit at Westchester, the Westchester Medical Center, Westchester and Community College. These things tend to remain on their own, spread-out campuses, so Valhalla's downtown remains small. However few, there are venues for socializing, such as The Valhalla Crossing, a pub/restaurant located in the historic train-station building. A (less historic) Metro-North station and its location near the Sprain Brook Parkway and the Bronx River Parkway make Valhalla easy to get in and out of, but the well-kept cul de sacs lined with split levels, raised ranches, and Cape Cods keep the suburban vibe.
