Best Places to Live 2018: Somers

If you skew toward a more laid-back Westchester lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the lower-county burbs, Somers, one of the northernmost towns in the county, might be just the community for you.

“There is a beautiful park, Reis Park, which provides a really great spot for everyone to picnic, and all the teams play there,” says Eileen McGrath, licensed broker at Douglas Elliman in Katonah. “There’s nice, large parcels of land for people seeking more privacy. You can’t get that closer to the city. It’s a little more relaxed living.”

Aaron Velez, branch manager and broker at Houlihan Lawrence in Brewster, says the town is classic Americana. “Everybody seems to know each other,” he notes. “It’s got a real small-town feel to it.”

Beyond parks, hiking trails, and excellent schools, the town is home to Heritage Hills, the largest condo development in the county, which offers residents two golf courses, swimming pools, and other recreational amenities. Almost a quarter of the town’s residents live in the complex, which appeals to empty nesters and younger families alike. And the town remains affordable, with a median sales price for properties at $550,000 last year.
