New Rochelle
The 411: Settled by Huguenots from La Rochelle, France, in 1688, New Rochelle is the second largest city in Westchester, and the seventh largest in New York State. New Rochelle, nicknamed Queen City of the Sound for its 2.7 miles of Long Island Sound shoreline, is just two miles from the Bronx border and 25 miles from downtown Manhattan. The densely developed former industrial downtown consists of condominiums, high-rises, offices, shopping centers, affordable housing complexes, a medical center, nursing homes, and two college campuses (including the largest Catholic women’s college in the U.S.). The remainder of the city consists of sprawling, residential neighborhoods and country, yacht, and beach clubs. The city operates a 300-slip marina with 150 moorings. Points of interest include the Thomas Paine Historical Site, Execution Rocks Lighthouse, Huckleberry Island, Leland Castle, a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle, the 105-acre Glen Island Park, 60-acre park Sheldrake Lake, the Wykagyl Country Club, and New Roc City, an entertainment complex that features a 19-screen movie theater, an IMAX theater, an ice hockey arena, mini-golf, go-karts, and an arcade. The city has been referenced/showcased repeatedly in myriad media including The Dick Van Dyke Show, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), Goodfellas, Michael Clayton, Burn After Reading, Guys and Dolls, Ragtime, and Starting Over.
