The 411: Sure, it’s a little sleepy here (okay, so the sidewalks roll up at 9 pm), but you’ve got to admire a town with spunk. When the town was told to vamoose 100 years ago to make room for the Croton Reservoir, the residents picked up their houses and businesses—literally—and moved a mile away. When Starbucks sought entry into this no-chain community, they stood their ground(s); Perks and Noka Joe now offer up the daily java. Katonah is not just spunky, but fun to explore, with lots of little galleries and upscale shops, along with a variety of eateries, most clustered along Katonah Avenue. The vibe is artsy and casual (yoga pants or jodhpurs and riding boots are not out of place here). It’s a feel-good kind of town and no wonder—the town is a veritable vortex of the healing arts. Find doctors, therapists, and counselors of all kinds, from marriage to massage, podiatry to past life regression. There’s even a psychiatric hospital, Four Winds on the Katonah/Cross River border. The beautifully laid-out town (designed by landscape architects GS and BS Olmstead) is filled with gorgeous Queen Anne, shingle-style, and Colonial Revival homes.
