Hawthorne

The 411: Hawthorne, an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Mount Pleasant, is a middle-of-the-road kind of place—literally. Situated smack-dab in the center of Westchester County, it is blessed with an enviable location, great access, nearby parks, restaurants, and shopping, a close-knit community, and more affordable housing than some of its neighboring towns. Originally known as Hammond’s Mills, the hamlet changed its name to Unionville after the Revolutionary War. By the late 19th century, Unionville, previously a farming community, had been subdivided into small parcels of land. In 1901, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, daughter of author Nathaniel Hawthorne, founded Rosary Hill Home, to care for terminally ill cancer patients, in neighboring Thornwood, where it still operates. In her honor, Unionville was rechristened Hawthorne. The hamlet is sandwiched between Thornwood and Valhalla and bisected by the Sprain Brook Parkway. Just to the west lies Route 9A (Saw Mill River Road) and its main north-south thoroughfare is Route 141 (Commerce Street), which houses a number of small businesses and restaurants and runs parallel to the Metro-North train tracks.
