Harrison

The 411: The members of this town’s exclusive Westchester Country Club hosted the Westchester Classic stop of the PGA Tour for many years. And Jean Harris dispatched her lover, “Scarsdale Diet” creator Dr. Herman Tarnower in his home here, the gatehouse of an old estate. But lots of different types of people—not just those with deep pockets—including the proprietors of its many Italian delis and second-generation contractors, call Harrison home. The town attracts a wide variety of residents to its different neighborhoods. Some, like the super-wealthy hamlet of Purchase and the Westchester Country Club area, are dotted with stone walls and gated multi-million-dollar homes and estates; others, like the working-class areas close to its two downtowns, are characterized by sidewalks, basketball hoops, and more affordably priced clapboard houses. The town comes together through its kids, schools, and spirited sports leagues, three active community centers, and much-used parks, like the one in downtown West Harrison sporting an elaborate water park-like swimming pool. CEOs and sub-contractors alike cheer on the Columbus Day parade during the town’s wildly popular “It’s Great to Live in Harrison” celebration, sampling authentic ethnic goodies from homemade sausage to sushi afterwards. Also calling Harrison home—and helping to offset residents’ taxes—are such corporate giants as MasterCard and PepsiCo; the lush compound of the latter features a spectacular, open-to-the-public outdoor sculpture garden.
