Hawthorne

Nestled between Thornwood and Valhalla, this census-designated place (CDP), a part of the Town of Mount Pleasant, is located in the smack-dab center of Westchester and its tight-knit community with a selection of restaurants, affordable housing and great access is literally a middle-of-the-road type of place. After a series of indecisive name changes, Hawthorne finally became known by its current name after it was decided that the village’s name was going to resonate Rose Hawthorne Lathrop’s compassionate legacy. Hawthorne Lathrop, daughter of 19th century author Nathaniel Hawthorne, founded a nursing home for incurably ill cancer patients in neighboring Thornwood in 1901 (where it is still operating today) and Unionville, the preceding name of the village, was renamed Hawthorne in her honor.

Hawthorne’s main thoroughfare is Route 141, also known as Commerce Street, which is lined with a variety of small restaurants and businesses as well as the Metro-North train tracks, which run parallel with the street.
