Hot-Deal Happy Hours and Bargain Bar Bites

Restaurants’ efforts to be user-friendly are your ticket to a trendy small-plates feast. But in the happy-go-lucky spirit, be prepared to roll with the punches if the menu contradicts the website. Expect a rough approximation, enjoy, and move on—preferably, to the next Happy Hour.

Madison Kitchen

Sample the cuisine of our own Chopped champion, Nick Di Bona, with three small plates and a glass of wine or beer for $15. Try the wonderful, breaded ricotta ravioli with bacon cream, or mini hen-of-the-woods pizza; cheese, charcuterie, and other boards are available for $6 to $10.

Monday through Friday, 4 - 6:30 pm
7 Madison Ave, Larchmont (914) 732-3024

MP Taverna

Chef Michael Psilakis’ Westchester place has only one item on its Happy Hour menu—$1.50 gyro-spiced beef sliders—but, wow are they good. And $4.50 draft beer, $5 house red or white wine, and $6 sangria make them a meal. The regular Greek menu starts at 5 pm, so consider a seafood appetizer ($8.95 to $13.95) or dip trio ($12.95).

1 Bridge St, Irvington  (914) 231-7854

BUtterfield 8

Beer lovers, this one’s for you: $3 domestic beers (or $4 house wine, $5 select cocktails) and $8 bar bites, including excellent Buffalo wings with all the fixin’s. Ask and you might get the signature pretzel bread with creamy mustard sauce. A weekday “barstool special” at this gastro-pub—$10 for a burger and beer from noon to 4 pm—segues right into Happy Hour, doesn’t it?

Monday through Friday, 4 - 7 pm
147 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains (914) 358-4881

NoMa Social

This clubby Radisson hot spot known for terrific tapas and cocktails is a good small-bites option anytime, but its new 4x4 Happy Hour offers a selection of $4 beer, cocktails, wine, and tapas—and you can always get five tapas and a pitcher of sangria for $50. Between the multitude of Martinis and Chef Bill Rosenberg’s way with small plates, you’ll make the most of your party buck.

Hudson at Haymount House

At this fine restaurant in a mansion that was allegedly used to portray Tara in Gone With the Wind, feel like a Southern belle (or beau) at Happy Hour on the back lawn, with river views, half-price wine and cocktails, and a menu of $6 to $15 plates such as Baja fish tacos and grilled merguez. Or cozy up at the bar near a fireplace and have a burger and fries with beer or wine ($19/$23).

Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish

Ever wish Happy Hour could last all day? That’s what’s going on here with the perpetual Red, White, & Blue special at the bar, next to a fireplace: $8 for Pabst Blue Ribbon on draft or house red or white wine, and six bluepoint oysters or raw clams—plus unlimited peanuts in the shell. Go just to check out the building, an 18th century farmhouse with all sorts of charm, bustling with throngs who come to feast on fantastic seafood.

The Iron Shaker

If the fireplace lounge area is available, grab it; otherwise, choose an intimate booth with queen-portrait wallpaper. Sip on $4 beers, $7 mixed drinks, and $8 house cocktails—but try to get there between 5 and 7 pm for complimentary appetizers, such as bruschetta, bocconcini with cherry tomatoes; and roasted red peppers. A mid-priced small-plates menu will tempt larger appetites.

The Tapp

Fantastic craft beers and good eats await at this low-lit brick-and-wood bar, with a $5 menu encompassing all draft beer, wines by the glass, well drinks, and “Wiseman shots” (Jim, Jack…). Start your evening with the hearty mac and cheese made with Weissbier on draft, or a piada sandwich with feta cheese, caramelized onions, mozzarella, tomato, and spinach, served with olives.
