Putting On The Ritz

Ritz CarltonWestchester Signature Shoppe

3 Renaissance Sq, White Plains (914) 467-5887

Like hotel restaurants, hotel gift shops usually get a
bad rap. But leave it to the Ritz-Carlton to change all that with its two acclaimed new eateries (42 and BLT Steak) and its new Westchester Signature Shoppe, opened mid-December. If you’re imagining the utilitarian space you’d see in a Holiday Inn, with its stock of tacky T-shirts, cheap little tchotchkes, and forgotten Advil, think again.

The Ritz-Carlton is worth a visit for this gift shop alone. Going far beyond all that standard hotel gift shop fare (which of course it does have), The Signature Shoppe offers a parade of luxurious labels—Gucci, Bugatchi, Bvlgari, Lacoste, and Labruche—as well as a special line of clothing and accessories that feature this hotelier’s own logo. Tucked off to the left of the main lobby and featuring rich dark wood paneling and plush carpeting in periwinkle blue and cream, the shop’s selection of tempting goodies for pampering weary travelers, thanking hostesses, or feathering one’s nest, rivals that of the finest traditional gift boutiques.

Steer your visiting friends and family to the Ritz (“You’ll be so much more comfortable there than on our creaky old sofa bed!”) and you might be rewarded with a hostess gift you really want, like L’Objet tabletop and decorative home items ($95-$500), Gucci and Christian Dior sunglasses ($250-$600), Bond No. 9 perfumes ($120-$195), fine papers by Vera Wang ($15-$35), woven leather handbags by Helen Kaminski ($200-$600), and a full line of scented candles and accessories by Labruche, Voluspa, and Archipelago ($7-$100). But who says you have to wait for company? Pop in to treat yourself to a little (or big) something, seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm.
