Millionaire's Row Is Back!

More than 100 years ago, grand castles and great estates lined South Broadway in Irvington and Tarrytown and were home to some of  America’s wealthiest families. Railroad tycoon Jay Gould built Lyndhurst Castle here, as did the founder of Lehman Brothers (his castle was called Pinkstone); just down the road, meanwhile, lies Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate. Because of all of these wealthy residents, this stretch of road came to be known in the 1800s as Millionaire’s Row. Today, the street seems to be returning to its gilded roots, thanks to the new luxury-home development Greystone-on-Hudson—named for Greystone Castle, the Millionaire’s Row mansion owned by Rockefeller’s partner in Standard Oil, Josiah Macy.

The development is the site of some of the largest and most luxurious homes in the region. Built by Greystone Mansion Group, the homes in Greystone-on-Hudson will be individually designed two- to five-acre estates, complete with concierge services for residents and their guests, priced at $5 million and up. The first of the 21 homes built is 8 Carriage Trail (pictured above), which sold last summer for $9 million. A Dutch Colonial with a gambrel cedar-shake roof and shingle siding, the home was inspired by a historic mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. At 17,000 square feet, it is impressive yet surprisingly comfortable. When you walk through the home, you don’t feel overwhelmed by the size, but you are blown away by its amenities.

The indoor sports center, for example, includes a rock-climbing wall and a basketball court—complete with a working scoreboard, for those last-second buzzer beaters. But there is something for everyone in this home, including a wine cellar and full tasting room, a game room, screening room, yoga/gym/massage room, and staff quarters (When you have a home this large, you need staff!).

Of course, the home is an entertainer’s paradise. It not only features a gourmet kitchen a professional chef would envy (complete with a stellar butler’s pantry, a separate walk-in pantry, and top-of-the-line appliances from Wolfe, Subzero, and Viking), it also offers 3,200 square feet of covered outdoor space—complete with a fireplace, flat-screen TV, large patio, and fully functional kitchen.

If the weather were glorious year-round in Westchester, you’d never need to go indoors, but you would definitely want to at this place, even if just to enjoy the master suite. Though the space hosts two beautiful bathrooms, the “her” master bath has a small bar with a wine fridge, perfect for grabbing a bottle of vino before you take a soak in the large tub—an evening of ultimate relaxation. The suite also has two massive walk-in closets, but the “her” closet is exceptional. Larger than some Manhattan apartments, it boasts more than 800 square feet. It has  a massive dressing area, storage galore, and a grand sitting area that could easily be turned into a private office.

This Greystone-on-Hudson home boasts 17,000 square feet of gracious living, including an envy-producing gourmet kitchen, high ceilings and windows galore, plus two spectactular bathrooms (his and hers, of course) in the massive master suite, which also has an 800-square-foot closet.

Meanwhile, no expense was spared when it came to construction materials either. The same stone found in the glacier rock that formed Central Park was also used in the enclave’s landscape, while the foundation was mined on site and is called Manhattan Schist. The flooring is made from hand-scraped hardwood; the exterior is covered in cedar shakes and copper; the widows are all mahogany.

While we imagine Wall Street bankers, big-league athletes, and celebrities calling these mansions their cribs, Frederik Eklund, real estate broker at Douglas Elliman and star of Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Listing, who will be selling the homes in Greystone-on-Hudson (his first Westchester property), sees another famous couple potentially making a move here: The Obamas. As anyone in Chappaqua could tell you, nothing is more luxurious than living next door to a former president (except, perhaps, living next door to a king or queen).
