Salon Maffei’s gorgeous new location boasts sky-high ceilings, a sleek and spacious ambience, and a staff of nearly 20 offering high-quality services.

Bigger and Better

Existing clients of White Plains’ Salon Maffei (formerly at 151 Mamaroneck Avenue) won’t have to look far to find the 13-year-old salon’s new location: Owner Nick Trombetta unveiled a grand, fully renovated space around the corner on East Post Road this spring. Originally a bank, the historic property presented Trombetta a golden opportunity to own after years of renting. “This was a building that was built in 1940. It’s one of the last Art Deco buildings in White Plains,” he says. After gutting the building, Trombetta set to work building a self-described “monster salon,” noting that “it’s not your standard space. When you first walk in, there’s a ‘wow’ factor. It’s extremely long and wide, and it’s got 20-foot ceilings.” The color expert says his increased staff of nearly 20 will continue to offer top hair color and wedding services, as well as eyebrow threading and makeup.

Beyond Balayage

Balayage has been the top hair color trend for what seems like forever now, but you may not have heard of its offspring, Flamboyage. Introduced in 2012 by Italian hair experts Davines, the highlighting technique is just now catching fire at Beauty Bar Lounge in Larchmont, reports owner Cecilia Care. In lieu of foil, special clear adhesive strips used in the process facilitate a soft, blended look, “like a child with natural highlights,” says Care. And, she adds, “My clients definitely get a better grow-out period, which saves them money.” Good for all conventional hair colors, a full head of Flamboyage costs $195 and up. Also in, Care says, are babylights, highlights weaved in very finely, “like a micro-weave.” Finally, there’s sombré, a subtler take on the dark-to-light ombré look that’s reigned in recent years. With less of a severe contrast in favor of more blended color, “It’s great for people who want to try ombré but don’t want it to look harsh,” says Care.

New Talent, New Tricks

Now is a great time to check out Gloss Salon in Katonah. This year, owner Shannon Nitti doubled her staff, bringing on stylists Mandy Manganiello and Caroline King, each with more than six years of industry experience. Other new additions include Hotheads Hair Extensions, a faster, more affordable alternative to traditional extensions. “It still is a very high-end look and feel, just with a better price,” says Nitti. “And it’s done in 45 minutes to an hour as opposed to three to five hours.” Pricing is by consultation, but she estimates a full set costs anywhere from $300 to $650 and up, while she can add in thickness for $175. (They’re real hair and reusable.) Wella’s latest pastel hair-color line is also newly available at the salon, with light pink, lilac, baby blue, mint green, and amethyst hues to choose from. “Pastel tones are a big trending thing right now,” says Nitti. “It’s a fun way to do more high-fashion colors but still be pretty and subtle.”

Upscale, modern, relaxed & friendly: Paulo’s Atelier in White Plains

Upscale, Low-Key Atelier

Bedford Hills favorite Paulo’s Atelier opened a second, smaller location in late April in White Plains. Owner Paulo Gregorio, who debuted his original spot eight years ago, says, “I’m really excited. I bought the place a year and a half ago and renovated it for better flow and made the [interior] more soothing, more relaxed, with better light to see color in.” While Gregorio says the concept is similar to the original Paulo’s—“upscale, modern, and clean in a friendly environment”—he notes the White Plains branch is half the size and “a little more relaxed, more low-key.” Compared with the first location’s staff of approximately 25, there are four stylists and two assistants on board, and Gregorio himself is on-site once a week on a rotating schedule. Expect the same high level of expertise, however, particularly in Gregorio’s specialty: color.

Here We Glo Again

Headed by makeup artist Heather Adessa, Glo Beauty Bar in Mamaroneck is expanding in the hair department with the recent addition of a second sink and four brand-new salon chairs. Of being able to accommodate twice the clientele in the new washing area, Adessa says, “It definitely helps with our wedding and color services.” Another boost has been the arrival of Olaplex, last year’s hysteria-raising new color-supplementing product that’s still trickling into supply closets at local salons. “It helps the integrity of the hair, especially when you’re doing something where you’re going from brown to blonde,” says Adessa. “You can also use it in single processes and as a conditioning treatment.” Considering a Kim Kardashian-inspired transformation from dark to platinum this summer? You’ll avoid breakage since Olaplex ($25+) is part of the color service. Also new: blow-dry packages and free weekly services for cut and blowout models.
