Summer Fun in Westchester: Playing Kickball, Softball, and Frisbee

Nostalgic for the days of grass stains and post-game ice cream cones? Join other grown-ups drawn to the neighborhood baseball diamond for an organized round of kickball (or Frisbee or Wiffle ball), just like you played back in middle school. The leagues here are made up of players who are mostly 18 and older, include oh-so-legit uniforms, and don’t care how unskilled you are (couch potatoes are welcome). Plus, one group calls theirs “a great alternative to Internet dating.”

Big League Kickball
More than 2000 players participated in last year’s multi-division Black Bear Saloon-sponsored games, where the philosophy is to “meet new people, have some fun, and share a few drinks afterwards.” The fee of $80 per person covers the eight-week season, team shirts and equipment, permits, parties, and bar specials. BLK’s mandate that at least four women must be in the field during each inning makes for a deliberately co-ed environment, possibly accounting for why five BLK couples got engaged in 2011. Sign up for the Purchase division as a full/company team, a group of friends, or as a free agent at

Registration is also open for the White Plains Ultimate Kickball league ( Games during the summer season, June 7 to August 2, are played Thursdays at 6 pm at White Plains High School.

Pelham Ultimate Frisbee Association
Registration for the semi-serious (as serious as ultimate Frisb—excuse us, “disc”—can get) Westchester Ultimate Disc, Inc., summer league is already closed, but PUFA may be accepting new players. According to the site (, “Nothing is certain in life, however, so you’d be well advised to get on the mailing list.” We do know the association is open to all ages, meaning the field is often manned by 40- to 70-year-olds—and their grandkids—and that games are played along the Sound at places like Shore Park and the New York Athletic Club.

City of Yonkers Softball League
Run by the Yonkers Adult Sports League, the season has in past years taken place on Friday nights throughout the summer. The field changes weekly and sponsors of the long-running league have included Stew Leonard’s, Con Ed, Lawrence Hospital, and St. John’s Hospital.
