Why Greenburgh Central 7 School District Has a “7” in Its Name

Why does Greenburgh Central 7 School District have a “7” in its name?

A: “The other school districts have numbers, too—they just don’t use them,” says Ivy Kraus, district clerk for Greenburgh Central 7. “We use the ‘seven’ because there are other Greenburghs in the area.” That is, the Greenburgh 11 Union Free School District in Dobbs Ferry, the Greenburgh-Graham Union Free School District in Hastings, and the Greenburgh-North Castle Union Free School District located in Dobbs Ferry, Valhalla, and Greenburgh. Oh, and Greenburgh Central 7 didn’t always go by 7—it was originally known as Greenburgh 8, until it merged with Hartsdale 7 in 1968.
