Restaurant Openings, Closings and News

Coriander Modern Indian opens in Larchmont, Taiim Cellar Slated for Hastings and more.

Rangoli in New Rochelle has closed and the owners have opened the 50-seat Coriander Modern Indian (154 Larchmont Ave, Larchmont 914-235-0134; corianderny.com) in the space that housed Sardegna Italian Restaurant. As opposed to the traditional dishes at Rangoli, Coriander offers a primarily contemporary menu (on iPads!) with such dishes as lamb Kolhapuri, Cochin shrimp curry, tandoori masaledar lamb chops, and grilled mahi mahi. Main dishes range from $14 to $27. Lunch and dinner is served Tuesday through Sunday; a prix fixe, three-course lunch is available for $13 to $15

This month, the owners of Taiim Falafel Shack in Hastings are planning to open the 46-seat Taiim Cellar (11 Boniface Circle, Scarsdale, no phone as of press time), a vegetarian Middle Eastern wine bar and tapas joint. The menu features many of the salads and dips offered at Taiim Falafel, but also new items such as a marinated beet salad, Lebanese and Sardinia cheese plates, lebna (cultured yogurt cheese) sandwich, and chocolate tahini truffles. The wine list is dominated by Middle Eastern selections (Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, Greece); most bottles cost from $30 to $50. Taiim Cellar will be open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner

The owners of Sala One Nine in the Bowery have opened Sala on Hudson (44 Maple St, Croton-on-Hudson 914-862-4100; salaonhudson.com), a Spanish restaurant serving approximately 30 tapas ($5 to $14) including dates wrapped in bacon, blood sausage with black chickpeas, and roasted baby beets with sheep’s milk cream cheese. Chicken or seafood paella and hanger steak with Brussels sprouts and bacon are among a quintet of large plates also offered. Sala is open for lunch and dinner every day

HDTV screens stream menus, food images, community news, TV programs, and local advertisements at Avenue Cafe (342 Greenwich Ave, Greenwich, CT 203-625-0103; avenuecafe.com), formerly Katzenberg Kafe. The menu features many made-from-scratch items, including house-roasted turkey breast and house-brined hot pastrami; five-plus daily-made soups; and freshly baked muffins, pastries, and quiches. Also on the menu: a DIY salad bar; vegetable hummus wrap; pork BLT with avocado; and burgers made with a ground chuck, sirloin, and brisket blend from the Arthur Avenue meat market. Most meal items cost $7.50 to $11.50. Avenue Café is open every day for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner (5 pm to 7 pm, depending on the day)

Tapas specialist Espana Wine & Tapas Bar (147 Larchmont Ave, Larchmont 914-833-1331; espanatapas.com) has new offerings on its winter menu: creamy mushroom and leek croquettes, fried quail eggs and chorizo on truffle toast, braised octopus and potatoes in a saffron sofrito, and turkey meatballs in tomato sauce. Most small plates range from $6 to $16.

The cast as a whole may yet find their stride, but a strong performance by Tevye’s household make for an inspired rendition of the classic production.
