Obscure Daily Holidays in January

You may not have heard Squirrel Appreciation Day before. Now that you have, celebrate!

This Month’s Holidays

Lesser-known reasons to mark your calendars

Jan 13-19: International Snowmobile Safety and Awareness Week • The week is meant to remind winter thrill-seekers to be as mindful driving around in the snow as they are on the highway (snowmobile.org).

Jan 21: Squirrel Appreciation Day • C’mon, who doesn’t love these fuzzy, nut-obsessed rodents? Apparently, enough of us do to warrant a national appreciation day.

Jan 24: Global Belly Laugh Day • “Laughs and smiles are sunshine that transform our moments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the 7 continents,” proclaims its website. Let the sun shine (bellylaughday.com).

Jan 28: Fun At Work Day • For those who take their work a little too seriously, this is the day to loosen up and enjoy yourself a bit on the job—just be sure you get your boss’s permission first, or on January 29, you could find yourself celebrating Pink Slip Day (funatworkday.com).

Those who appreciate their health food, personal security, and accordions may want to take note: January is also Tubers and Dried Fruit Month, National Stalking Awareness Month, and part of National Polka Music Month
