FeedArthur Ave. Bread Moves to Sleepy Hollow
Arthur Ave. Bread has moved the bulk of its wholesale and retail operations from the Bronx to Sleepy Hollow (149 Cortlandt St 914-909-5454). The 57-year-old, family-run Italian bakery, opened in 1954 by Gerardo Galiano, is known for its pane di casa—a simple, round, thick bread—as well as long bastones and crusty baguettes. “We like what the Bronx was, but it’s too overcrowded now, and more of our customers are in Westchester,” says bakery president and Briarcliff Manor resident Walter Galiano, Jr. “We chose Sleepy Hollow because it’s a close-knit, family-oriented community with a good merchants’ association, but it also has a bit of an edge, like the Bronx.” Arthur Ave. Bread products are sold at county A&Ps and ShopRites. And, if the retail shop is closed, enter through the garage bay any time to make a purchase. (Just make sure to bring cash.)
