Run by the SPCA of Westchester, Camp Critter offers young animal lovers a unique opportunity to learn all about their favorite creatures—from animal sheltering to cruelty prevention and training. Campers take on projects like baking dog biscuits and feeding them to the shelter dogs using clicker training; helping to socialize puppies and kittens to make them more adoptable; and becoming “animal cops,” reviewing evidence of real animal cruelty cases. The program also includes animal-related arts and crafts and hands-on time with visiting critters from Teatown, the Greenburgh Nature Center, and Wolf Conservation Center.

Summer Camp at the Boulder Brook Equestrian Center

Scarsdale (914) 725-3912; boulderbrookequestrian.com

If you can’t make your child’s wish of having his or her little own pony come true, you can at least let them ride all summer long at the Boulder Brook Equestrian Center. The center’s equestrian day camp includes daily riding instruction, lessons in horse care  (grooming, tacking, and handling) and stable management, as well as horse games, crafts, and activities. This combination of riding and horsemanship is designed to create well-educated and confident riders. Older, more experienced riders can enroll in Teen Camp, in which they also learn competition skills, horse handling, show preparation, and equine first aid and nutrition. When campers are ready to slide out of their saddles, swimming at the Scarsdale Pool is available.
