What We’ve Heard From Our Readers Lately

The Westchester Magazine inbox for February.

New Faces

How terrible! Of all the quotes that could have been put in your magazine on page 4 [“Contents,” January 2014], you choose the one saying, “As Jews, we had prospered on the blood and sweat of Muslims.” This is his opinion, with no backup evidence. Your decision to put this on page 4 only serves to perpetuate a stereotype that some people may still have about Jewish people. There are many reasons why Jewish people prospered in Iran. To me, this is an example of unfair and unbalanced media coverage.
—Marvin Grossman, Queens, New York

Editor’s Response: We appreciate your feedback, but would like to clarify. The quote we chose was from Phillip Kermanshachi, an immigrant from Iran, who was telling the story of how he arrived in Westchester. It isn’t, as you suggest, an opinion, but rather his citing facts from his life.

I really enjoyed the article [“New Faces of Westchester,” January 2013]. You did a great job [editing my profile]. It was very interesting to hear other people’s points of view on settling in Westchester and it gives a voice and face to the sources of immigration you featured.

PS: I already got a card by a fellow Frenchman upon reading my section. Who knows what connections might develop as a result, too?

The Bar Bible

I absolutely loved “The Bar Bible” article in January’s issue. As a 21 year old, the bar scene in Westchester has already gotten old. My friends and I always resort to taking a train into the city to guarantee a good time. But after reading this article, I now have some great destinations, and I know what to expect from each bar. Thank you for sacrificing your livers to give us hope for a great night out in Westchester!

Our Redesign

I wanted to touch base regarding the magazine redesign—it looks fabulous! However, I was disappointed to see that Alvin & Friends was not included in the cover story “The Bar Bible.” We have a spacious bar area (with a community table that seats 20-plus) and live music on Friday and Saturday nights, providing a sophisticated ambience I haven’t seen elsewhere.

From westchestermagazine.com:

Madelon Rosen-Solomon, regarding “The Bar Bible”: You should check out the bartender at Okinawa in Ossining. He is a great combo of personality and drink-making wizardry; [I] forget his name but people come from all around just for him.

AD Faried, regarding “How to Pick a Fight in Westchester”: Westchester Fight Club is definitely a good one.

Regarding The Bar Bible:

Joe Lore: Love this!!!
Allison Churchill: Thank you for your sacrifice.

We asked: “What are your favorite places to sled in the County?”

You answered:

Danielle Gold: Leonard Park in Mount Kisco is great.
Michael Carlson: Is there any other place besides Harrison HS?! Place rocks!!

What’s weirder, that up in NY they’re distilling whiskey from beer, or that it’s not in Brooklyn?

Which is your favorite room from Westchester Magazine’s Design Contest?

@WestchesterMag You guys should add “Graphic Design Studio” to your best of list for next year.
