Winners
Kimberly Cecchini, Robert Rendo, Sean Bugara, Deborah Ashley, and Michelle Gonzalez These five Westchester County teachers earned national certification—the highest credential a classroom teacher can receive—from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
County municipalities and school districts. In a sign that the economy may finally be improving, revenue from sales taxes in Westchester grew 2 percent. Sales-tax revenue is divided among the county, the municipalities, and their schools.
Port Chester residents. The village’s iconic Capitol Theatre will get a reboot, thanks to entrepreneur Peter Shapiro, who plans to sink about $2 million into its renovations in order to reopen it as a live-performance venue.
Jason Dong. The Rye Brook mail carrier delivered more than the mail to an elderly couple on his beat; Jason Dong helped police rescue them from a raging fire that was engulfing their home. Rye Brook Police Chief said in published reports, “He was in the right place at the right time, and really did a heroic thing.”
Losers
County ATM users. Authorities discovered a sophisticated skimming scheme in which spy cameras placed at machines captured the PINs and “dip readers” stole the card numbers of unsuspecting ATM users—resulting in about $1 million of stolen money.
Dean Martin. The former computer teacher at Saunders Trades and Technical High School in Yonkers was found guilty of tampering with
students’ grades and of sexual abuse, and
convicted of 19 felonies and seven misdemeanors. Martin adjusted students’ grades and attendance records in order to coerce them into sexual acts.
The Yonkers statue desecrator. The YPD has released surveillance footage of the man believed responsible for a rash of vandalism of religious statues at 10 homes and two churches in the city. The suspect’s face is not visible on the videotape, but he has a unique gait. The police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
Ultimate Quality Food and Fuel Mart, 60 Elm St, Yonkers. The New York Attorney General fined its owners $7,500 for price gouging after the shop raised gas prices during Tropical Storm Irene from $3.82 on August 26 to $4.79 for the next couple of days, despite wholesale gas rising at a much lower rate.
