The best DVD releases.
Best of 2006
Spend a cold winter month catching up with the DVD releases that may have passed under your radar last year.
DVD Release Date: August 8, 2006, Universal Studios
First-time director Rian Johnson expertly recasts a Dashiell Hammett-style noir mystery as a teen drama, complete with adolescents talking in a mixture of high-school slang and hard-boiled detective jargon. (You get used to it.) With his role as shamus Brendan, star Joseph Gordon-Levitt—fresh off an acclaimed performance in Mysterious Skin—continues his bid to become the best actor of his generation.
Kicking and Screaming
DVD Release Date: August 22, The Criterion Collection
After years of anticipation (at least for me), The Squid and the Whale director Noah Baumbach’s underappreciated debut film finally secured a DVD release—from the pull-out-the-stops Criterion Collection, no less. The movie is an often hilarious and emotionally honest look at the directionless year following college graduation. Think The Graduate for the slacker set.
Arrested Development: Season Three
DVD Release Date: August 29, 2006, 20th Century Fox
Most recent on the list of Fox’s cancelled-too-soon sitcoms, the brilliant Arrested Development released its concluding (and sadly truncated) season over the summer. Look for guest stars like Charlize Theron, James Lipton, and Ben Stiller to join the dysfunctional Bluth family in off-the-wall situations and lightning-fast repartee.
