The Latest Town News in Buchanan, Ardsley, Armonk, White Plains, and Yonkers

BUCHANAN—The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has fast-tracked a series of safety upgrades that will be required at Indian Point and the country’s other nuclear power plants, in response to the Japanese nuclear reactor crisis at its Fukushima plant. The enhancements are designed to better protect the power plants from natural disasters and total power losses.

ARDSLEY—The body of 20-year-old Charles McCarthy of Hartsdale, a Westchester Community College student and Edgemont High School grad, was discovered by an Ardsley homeowner on the homeowner’s lawn. McCarthy had a tattoo on his shoulder bearing the date 10/18/05; he died one day after the sixth anniversary of that date. At press time, the cause of death was unknown.

ARMONK—About 150 dogs rescued from puppy mills in the Midwest are being brought to several New York City–area shelters, including Adopt-A-Dog in Armonk, to receive care and find placement in loving homes.

WHITE PLAINS—The names and mug shots of 11 defendants charged in a sex sting at Saxon Woods Park, whose cases were sealed by the court, were inadvertently released to the pubic. The police claim they weren’t properly notified by the White Plains City Court that the cases were sealed—standard procedure in cases in which defendants plead guilty to minor violations on first offenses.

YONKERS—The funeral for an octogenarian couple was held in their hometown of Yonkers and their bodies laid to rest at Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, after being discovered dead together in the hot tub of their winter home in Fort Myers, Florida. The cause of their deaths remains under investigation.
