Westchester’s First Ever Summer Children’s Book Festival at the Westchester Mall

Jun 15, 2019
12:00 PM until 04:00 PM

The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival (CCBF) is proud to launch the first ever Summer Book Festival, this Saturday, June 15 at the Westchester Mall from noon to 4 pm.  CCBF continues their efforts to bring thought provoking children’s books and authors to kids throughout Westchester. Sixteen favorite children’s authors will be on hand including Bernard Most (What If the Dinosaurs Came Back?), Michael Northrop (the Polaris series), Todd Strasser (The Wave) and Diana Murray (Unicorn Day).

The festival will include story times, costumed characters and crafts. Admission is free.

Books will be available for purchase and signature.

Partial proceeds from the Summer Book Festival will go to the Summer Reading Buddies program. The CCBF works closely with the JCY-WCP Summer Reading Buddies program to combat the “Summer Slide” by supporting programs in Yonkers’ and Ossining’ public libraries.

Sally Pinto, Director of JCY Programs notes “The Summer Slide refers to the loss of achievement gains that happen to children who do not read over the summer due to the fact that they are not in school.  We help to prevent it by offering one on one reading sessions with students and fun activities that relate to what they have read.  The volunteers ensure that the students are reading interesting books that are grade level.”

In 2018, over 1000 children attended a Summer Reading Buddies program with 300 adult and teen volunteer mentors in either Yonkers or Ossining libraries.

Program dates for 2019 are:

Ossining Public Library, July 12 – August 9, every Friday from 10:00-12:00 pm and Yonkers Riverfront Library, July 9 – August 14, every Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:00- 12:00 pm.

Adults and teens interested in mentoring, may contact Madeline Finesmith at Mfinesmith@jcy-wcp.com.
