Description

The theme of YOHO artist Emily Stedman’s new show, “A Place to Remember,” at the Donald Gallery in Dobbs Ferry, New York, suggests the emotional state of being you feel when you have been affected by a special location you can’t forget, no matter how long ago you were there.

Not content to simply capture the reality of a location, Stedman’s lustrous, transparent watercolor paintings, capture the feelings that are evoked when something familiar and well traveled suddenly appears fresh and new again. She finds inspiration in memory and the everyday world. Italy, Ireland, England,  and several  States are some of the locations that Stedman has painted to express  a place etched in enduring memory.

Stedman uses a direct approach to her watercolor paintings. Rather than starting with the lightest colors, she works from dark to light. The first step is a preliminary sketch, blocking in the shapes and mid-values, while saving white paper. The white of the paper left will be the center of interest. The next step is to add the darkest darks which illuminates the mid-values and the white of the paper. At this point she glazes selective areas and adds finishing details which refine the picture. Stedman says this is the most fun part of the process , because you can use your small brushes, sponges and pens to add the final details and textures  giving the painting its finished quality.

Emily Stedman has exhibited her work throughout the United States including The Brooklyn Museum, in Brooklyn, New York; New York Mercantile Exchange, Corporate Headquarters, NY, NY; Selena Gallery, Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY; and NOHO/M55 Gallery in the Chelsea art district in New York City. Her studio is in the YOHO Artists’ Building in Yonkers, New York. She is a featured artist on Barebrush.com and hosts a life drawing group at NOHO/M55 Gallery.

An opening reception for “A Place to Remember” will be held on Sunday, March 8th, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
