What To Do

Tin Punching Workshop

Date/Time

Jan 15, 2018
01:00 PM until 03:00 PM

Description

Does the winter have you feeling a bit of blue? We have the cure for you! Beat the winter doldrums by grabbing the kids and stopping by the New Castle Historical Society for a family-friendly historic tin-punch workshop on Monday, January 15th, from 1-3pm.

Tin smiths, or tinners, used tin-punching throughout the 18th and 19th centuries as a way to decorate household objects, such as lanterns, candle holders, pots and pans, tea kettles and even cabinet doors. Since tin was often expensive and difficult to obtain, tin smiths would use sheets of iron covered in tin to create their work. This material was also very easy to work with and required little to no maintenance.

Program participants will have the chance to try out their tin-punching skills and make their own decorations to take home!

In addition to the workshop, the NCHS’s exhibition, “Carrie Chapman Catt and the Women’s Suffrage Movement,” will be on display. Museum tours will also be available.

Registration is recommended for this program. Please register here https://www.eventbrite.com/e/19th-century-tin-punch-workshop-registration-41705782117 or by calling 914-238-4666.
